Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended a memorial and burial ceremony in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang on July 21, commemorating 81 Vietnamese soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Cambodia and Vietnam, ahead of the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27).

During the event held at the Doc Ba Dac cemetery in Thoi Son ward, Secretary of the provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Tien Hai delivered an eulogy praising the K93 team’s tireless work. Since 2001, the unit has recovered 2,141 martyrs’ remains in Cambodia, with 251 identified. During the 2024–2025 dry-season search, 56 sets of remains were located across 42 sites. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on July 20 issued an urgent dispatch ordering swift and decisive response to Typhoon Wipha, a powerful storm packing winds of level 12 and set to strike northern and north-central Vietnam from July 21 evening.

In the dispatch, the PM called for a coordination of ministries, including national defence, public security, agriculture, and environment, alongside local authorities in the storm’s path. Emphasis was placed on absolute urgency and resolute action to protect lives and property of the public and the State, while minimising damage caused by the storm. Read full story

- Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports have shown signs of strong recovery, with the total export value in the first seven months of 2025 estimated at over 3.83 billion USD, following a sharp decline earlier this year.

- The Vietnam Airlines Group, encompassing Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, and Vasco, announced comprehensive flight modifications for July 21 to ensure safety for passengers and crew members as Typhoon Wipha intensifies its approach towards Vietnam’s northern coast.

Vietnam Airlines canceled several key domestic routes, including flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong (VN1188, VN1171, VN7188, VN7189, VN7056, and VN7057), as well as routes to Con Dao (VN1856 and VN1857). Meanwhile, Pacific Airlines rescheduled its flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong (BL6440 and BL6441), assuring take-off and landing at Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong city before 12:00 pm on July 21. - In the wake of the catastrophic boat capsizing in Ha Long Bay, the northern province of Quang Ninh, emergency relief efforts have been mobilised to support the bereaved families and survivors.

The Vietnam Red Cross Society Central Committee on July 20 decided to allocate 215 million VND (over 8,200 USD) from its disaster relief fund to assist the victims and their families. Of the total, 195 million VND was earmarked for the families of 39 deceased and missing individuals, each 5 million VND, while 20 million VND for the 10 injured, each 2 million VND. Read full story

- Storm No. 3, internationally known as Typhoon Wipha, passed north of China’s Leizhou Peninsula on the morning of July 21 and entered the northern Gulf of Tonkin, posing a growing threat to Vietnam’s northern and north-central coastal regions, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 10:00 am, the storm’s centre was positioned at around 21.2 degrees North and 109.6 degrees East, approximately 190km southeast of Quang Ninh, 310km east of Hai Phong, and 360km east-northeast of Ninh Binh. Maximum sustained winds near the storm’s centre reached Level 9 (75–88 km/h), with gusts up to Level 11. Wipha was moving west-southwest at a speed of 10–15 km/h. Read full story

- At least three people were dead and over 300,000 individuals have been affected by Typhoon Wipha in recent days, Philippine authorities said on July 20.
