India and Can Tho city agreed to enhance multi-sector bilateral cooperation at a working session on June 17 between municipal leaders and Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya.
The merger of Can Tho, and Soc Trang and Hau Giang, along with restructuring of the administrative apparatus and perfecting a two-tier governance model, presents a historic opportunity to “redesign” a more streamlined, smarter, and better-connected governance system.
During the meeting, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Truong Canh Tuyen briefed an overview of the city’s development prospects and strategic advantages, particularly in light of the planned merger with the neighbouring provinces of Soc Trang and Hau Giang.
Can Tho hopes to continue receiving assistance and cooperation from ActionAid for programmes and projects in areas such as climate change adaptation, education, support for vulnerable groups, and plastic waste reduction.
The planned merger of Can Tho with the neighbouring provinces of Hau Giang and Soc Trang is expected to open up new opportunities and unlock local potential, a municipal official has said.
Can Tho is set to merge with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces, forming a vibrant economic hub spanning 6,400 sq.km and serving over 4 million residents.
Once completed, this will become the largest shopping mall in the Mekong Delta, with a scale nine times larger than the region’s current largest commercial centre.
Once operational, the plant is projected to create over 5,000 direct jobs and generate approximately 500 million USD in annual revenue, primarily through exports. The project is expected to significantly enhance regional employment and economic growth, contributing to Can Tho’s development and the broader Mekong Delta region.
Can Tho is preparing to break ground on a 300-ha secondary factory in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP). Therefore, the city is eager to attract investments, especially from Singapore.
