Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s tour to Europe from June 5 to 14 served as a solid foundation and source of inspiration for Vietnam to continue realising its national development goals and attracting international resources in the new era.
During the trip, the PM engaged in more than 80 activities. It helped deepen bilateral ties, contributing to peace, cooperation, and development both in the region and the world at large.
The Vietnamese leader proposed Uppsala University establish a partnership with a national university in Vietnam; strengthen collaboration in education, research, and academic exchanges with Vietnamese institutions; and offer scholarships to Vietnamese students and researchers, thus advancing the newly established sectoral strategic partnership in science, technology, and innovation between the two countries.
The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
On this occasion, the two leaders agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a sectoral strategic partnership in science, technology, and innovation, and pledged to intensify cooperation in various areas, including innovation, high technology, nuclear energy, semiconductors, green and digital transitions.

This is the first visit to Sweden by a Vietnamese PM in six years, aiming to further intensify Vietnam’s relations with Sweden, which holds an important role and stature in Europe.
Sweden was the first Western country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on 11 January 1969, during Vietnam’s difficult struggle for independence and national reunification. Over more than half a century, the two countries have continuously worked to build and strengthen their bilateral ties, which have grown increasingly substantive and enduring, yielding proud achievements across multiple sectors.

The trip is made at the invitation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President of Frannce Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal, and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson.
