Vietnam, UNESCO jointly establish maths, physics centres

Hanoi (VNA)– Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on August 24 signedan agreement to establish two category 2 centres for mathematics and physics.

They are postgraduateeducation centres for mathematics and physics which will help implement basicscience programmes as well as theoretical physics, said Irina Bokova, Director-Generalof UNESCO at the signing ceremony.

She also highly valuedVietnam’s investment in education and renovation reforms, describing it as animportant momentum in sustainable development, contributing to the settlementof challenges in the world such as climate change.

For his part, Ministerof Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh said with the establishment of the twomathematics and physics centres, Vietnam wants to contribute to the developmentof basic science within the goals set by UNESCO, while sharing and supportingregional and developing countries in these areas.

The signing of thepact will not only help Vietnam boost its cooperation with member countries ofthe Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) as well as developed anddeveloping nations in the world via the UNESCO network. It will also elevatethe status of Vietnam’s science while contributing to the development of basicscience in the region and the world.

The establishment ofthe two centres under the auspice of UNESCO in Vietnam is in line with thecountry’s science and technology development strategy for the 2011-2020 period withan aim of setting up research institutes that meet regional and globalstandards.

Category 2 centres arespecialised institutes in the fields of education, science, culture andinformation set up in UNESCO’s member countries. They are established for themission of regional and international research and specialised training withinthe policies and strategies of UNESCO. They contribute to the implementation ofthe organisation’s objectives and development programmes, as well as thepromotion of international expertise cooperation between member countries.-VNA
