– The Prime Minister has recently approved an action plan to conserveprimates in Vietnam until 2025 with a vision to 2030.

The plancalls for strengthening law enforcement to combat the hunt and illegal trade by2025, towards reducing hunting by 70 percent, as well as building three rescuecentres to save and release primates back into the wild.

The planrequires building an inter-sectoral cooperation mechanism and confiscatingshotguns in residential areas where endangered primates in need of protectionlive.

Nationalparks and sanctuaries home to rare and endangered primates are also urged touse spatial monitoring and reporting tools to prevent hunting. State budgetfunds will be earmarked for them to study, protect and monitor primates whileexpanding forestation to create more living spaces for primates.

The scheme aimsto boost law enforcement agencies’ awareness of conservation work andincorporating primate conservation into a project on strengthening the capacityof sanctuaries.

Localcommunities will be also educated on the role of women and gender equality in conservationwhile awareness campaigns will be launched to minimise the consumption ofproducts originating from primates.

Thegovernment and philanthropists will provide scholarships, especially for womenwho want to take training courses on primate conservation.

Meanwhile, lectureson primate conservation will be added to school and tertiary curricula.-VNA

𒊎 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
