Advanced radiotherapy centre put into operation in Hanoi

Equipped with modern medical facilities, the100-billion VND (4.75 million USD) centre will provide most of theworld's advanced techniques in cancer treatment.

Cancer is aleading disease that kills 70,000 Vietnamese people yearly. The risingcancer rate is worrying the society, while the number of cancertreatment units, especially radiation facilities, is limited in thecountry," said the hospital's Director Nguyen Thanh Liem.

"The centre will contribute towards reducing the number of Vietnamese people going abroad for cancer treatment," said Liem.

Headded that radiation therapy plays an important role in cancertreatment and is given to 50 to 70 percent of the cancer patients.

Alongwith the surgery, chemotherapy, stem-cell and gene technologydepartments, the centre will help to improve the quality of the cancertreatment facilities in the hospital's oncology and cancer department inthe coming years.

According to the National Cancer PreventionProgramme statistics, Vietnam sees 200,000 new cancer cases yearly, ofwhich 80 percent are detected late.-VNA
