Vietnam and India co-chaired the first meeting of the Asian DefenceMinisters Meeting Plus (ADMM+) Experts’ Working Group on HumanitarianMine Action (EWG on HMA) in Hanoi on June 18.
Addressing theevent, Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinhstressed that many countries in the region have been affected by theconsequences caused by bombs and mines left over from wars, calling onthem to team up to handle the issue.
Vinh said that Vietnam isone of the countries that suffer most seriously from unexploded bombsand mines dropped during times of conflict. The Vietnam People’s Army isdoing its utmost to overcome the resultant impacts by clearing theordnance, improving the environment and helping local people stabilisetheir life and production activities.
He noted the VietnameseGovernment always backs collaboration among regional countries andothers in promoting humanitarian mine action, affirming that the ADMMevent enabled Vietnam and other member nations to share experience andsupport to cope with the challenges and consequences.
He saidhe believes that by increasing their mutual understanding, regionalcountries will be able to strengthen their cooperation in the field andbring about practical benefits for themselves.
An action plan was presented at the event for the working group between 2014 and 2017.
Participants delivered a number of reports on the damage caused byunexploded ordnance dropped during wars and conflicts in ASEAN countriesand others.
Vietnamese representatives put forth some solutions to overcome the issues.
