Authorities visit Khmer people on occasion of Sene Dolta festival

The Southwestern Steering Committee and provincial officials have visited and presented gifts to monks and families of the Khmer ethnic group on the occasion of the 2014 Sene Dolta festival in Mekong Delta Bac Lieu province and Can Tho City.

The delegations wished theKhmer people a joyous and prosperous Sene Dolta festival, and called fortheir further contribution to the common process of the country’sdevelopment.

Additionally, the provincial delegation visited andpresented hundreds of gifts to Khmer pagodas, ethnic boarding schoolsand other local agencies.

Meanwhile, Can Thoauthorities also gave nearly 100 gifts, worth 30 million VND (1,428 USD)to Khmer pagodas, local retired people and social policy beneficiariesof outstanding Khmer families in the city.

TranThanh Man, Secretary of Can Tho City’s Party Committee, hailed thecontribution made by the Union of Patriotic Monks’ Can Tho chapter inmaintaining social order, and spoke highly of Khmer people’s efforts inshaping and preserving the national cultural identity and diversity inthe Mekong Delta.

This year’s Sene Dolta festival takes place from September 22–24.

SeneDolta is one of the largest annual Khmer festivals, along with CholChnam Thmay (New Year) and Ooc Oom Bok, a festival that pays tribute tothe Moon for good harvests.

Duringthe Sene Dolta festival, Khmer people get together to pay tribute totheir ancestors and enjoy traditional songs and dance after a hardyear’s work.-VNA
