Belgian university backs Vietnam’s family medical practice training

HCM City (VNA) – The Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine inked a deal with the Universityof Liège, Belgium for a Europe-standard family medicine training programme in HCMCity on March 7.

The Belgianuniversity will send two teams of experts to Vietnam annually to provide practicaltraining for lecturers, doctors and nurses of the family medical servicedepartment at the Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Vice Principal of theHCM City-based University Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hiep said.

Belgian experts willalso share experience in managing a family medicine clinic and outstandingVietnamese trainees will get scholarships to study in Belgium, he added.

Speaking at thesigning ceremony, Professor Didier Giet, head of the General Medicine Facultyat the University of Liège said the family health service is a successful modelin Europe which satisfies about 90 percent of healthcare demand from locals,with only 10 percent of patients in critical conditions admitted to hospitals.

It helps reducecosts for patients and eases the burden on hospitals, he noted.

The professor alsostressed that the model in Vietnam should not completely imitate that of Belgium.The University of Liège will support Vietnam to develop a practice-drivensystem that meets European standards.

The Pham Ngoc ThachUniversity of Medicine has been assigned by the Ministry of Health to provideeducation and training for family health workers in Ho Chi Minh City since2000.

It launched thefirst family medical practice in late February 2017.-VNA

😼 Vietnam, France collaborate in vaccine production technology transfer

Under the agreement, VNVC and Sanofi will gradually implement technology transfers to enable domestic production of several key Sanofi vaccines that are widely used in Vietnam. In addition, Sanofi will support VNVC in training human resources and quality management in vaccine research and manufacturing.
