Binh Thuan (VNA) – The south-central coastal province of Binh Thuan has taken effective measures to prevent and put an end to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, joining hands with the whole country to get the European Council (EC)’s “yellow card” warning removed.

Over the years, Binh Thuan has mobilised the engagement of the whole political system in combating IUU fishing and implementing EC recommendations, focusing on realising urgent tasks and solutions in IUU fishing prevention and control following the Prime Minister’s direction.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, since early 2023, Binh Thuan has seen no fishing vessels violating foreign waters.

However, the risk of of the act among the local fleet has remained high, the department said, adding that local authorities have made a list of vessels with high risks to apply special management and supervision measures, including controlling their activities at sea through the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS).

Alongside, Binh Thuan has renovated and promoted the efficiency of communications activities to popularise legal regulations on IUU fishing prevention and control and on punishments for violations.

In order to deal with limitations and shortcomings in fleet management as well as monitoring, inspection, and control of fishing vessel activities at sea, the Binh Thuan People's Committee has worked out seven groups of solutions.

So far, 1,942 operating boats with a length from 15m and above out of the 1,🌞953 local fishing vessels have installed VMS, and the rest are currently out of service./🌟.
