Businesses discuss investment in sea economy

Ten foreign investors and a large number of domestic businesses gathered in the northern port city of Hai Phong on July 9 for a conference to promote Vietnam ’s sea economy in 2010.

Theparticipants said it is necessary to draw up a comprehensive strategy onsea environment and natural resources and combine sea economyactivities with ensuring security and sea and island sovereignty.

Localities should enhance international and regionalcooperation, devise concrete projects to mobilise official developmentassistance and encourage foreign investors with financial, managementand advanced technology capability for coastal regions’ development,they said

Sea economy is estimated to make up 47-48percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The arrival of anumber of the world’s leading sea port and shipping groups has helpedmodernise the country’s sea port system.

Hai Phong, amain gateway to the sea in northern Vietnam , is now home to morethan 30 seaport service businesses.

The city’s LachHuyen port is planned to become an international gateway port in thecountry’s northern region by 2030 which will be capable of receiving6,000 TEU vessels./.
