HCM City (VNA) – A Canadian cherr🅷y festival opened in the SC Vivocity trade centre in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7 on July 16, aiming to introduce Vietnamese consumers with cherry grown in British Columbia, a western state of Canada.
Speaking at the event, jointly held by the Canadian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, Co.op Extra supermarket chain and Nam Chan Food Corporation, Canadian Trade Counsellor Barbara Nadea said that the Canadian government has invested strongly in cherry production and successfully developed nutritious cherry varieties.
Currently, British Columbia has more than 300 family cherry farms covering a total area of 4,000 hectares. Canadian cherry has met food safety and origin standards to be sold in Asian and European markets.
According to Duong Minh Quang, Deputy General Director of Co.op Extra, Canada is among leading countries in fruit producing, storing and processing with advanced and environmental friendly technology.
Co.op Extra and Vietnamese importers hope to provide Vietnamese consumers with high quality and safe products and variety of choices in food, farm produce and fruits, he added.
Last year, the Canadian Embassy held a similar festival in Hanoi. In 2015, Canada exported over 1.7 million USD worth of cherry to Vietnam, a 50-percent rise over 2014.-VNA
