Citizen protection measures carried out for detained fishermen
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed the Vietnam Embassy in Malaysia to work with Vietnamese and Malaysian competent agencies in handling the case related to Malaysia’s detaining of two fishing boats and 21 fishermen of Vietnam and carry out necessary citizen protection measures, said the ministry’s spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang.
Hanoi (VNA) – TheMinistry of Foreign Affairs has directed the Vietnam Embassy in Malaysia towork with Vietnamese and Malaysian competent agencies in handling the case relatedto Malaysia’s detaining of two fishing boats and 21 fishermen of Vietnam andcarry out necessary citizen protection measures, said the ministry’sspokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang.
Hang made the statement on July 4 whilefielding reporters’ questions about the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA)’sarrest of the two fishing boats and fishermen from Kien Giang province on June21 in the waters about 40 nautical miles away from the northern coast ofKuching, Sarawak state.
She cited the VietnameseEmbassy’s verified information as saying that first trial for the case isscheduled to take place on July 5.
Also according to the embassy,the MMEA captured 25 foreign fishing vessels, including 20 from Vietnam, off thecoasts of Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan states during the first two weeks ofMay.
The embassy was directed to keepcontact with Malaysian competent agencies to keep track of the case and to askthe Malaysian side to soon provide a list of detained Vietnamese fishermen.
The embassy was also requested toactively carry out necessary citizen protection measures and work with relatedVietnamese localities to complete needed procedures for bringing the fishermenback home when Malaysia issues deportation orders.-VNA
Vietnam condemns and strongly objects to inhuman treatment of, use of or threat to use force against its fishermen, the Foreign Ministry Spokesman said in the wake of an attack on a fishing boat.
Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang has reiterated that Vietnam strongly opposes inhuman behaviours, use or threat to use force against its fishermen.
Fishermen must be treated humanely and force or a threat to use force against fishermen must not be used, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said at a regular press conference on October 12.
