Hanoi (VNA) - Deputy PrimeMinister Trinh Dinh Dung has approved a proposal to build a coal shipmentport in the southern region.

Thedeputy PM assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade in cooperation with theMinistry of Transport and relevant agencies to complete the port constructionfeasibility report. The port will carry coal to thermo-power plants in the MekongDelta region.

Asper the deputy PM’s instruction, the ministries will propose coal shipmentplans to serve the urgent thermo-power plant demand in the region whilebuilding suitable investment plans to submit to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc forapproval.

Accordingto the national electricity development master plan, the Mekong Delta regionwill have seven major thermo-power centres, including Long Phu, Song Hau, DuyenHai, Bac Lieu, An Giang, Kien Luong and Tien Giang.

Thetotal demand of imported coal for the thermo-power centres would be around 11million tonnes by 2020 and 22 million tonnes by 2025. The coal demand wouldincrease to 43 million tonnes by 2030.

Localcoal resources have been concentrated in the northeastern province of QuangNinh which mainly serve for thermo-power centres in the northern and centralprovinces.

Expertsargue that Vietnam should have a coal trans-shipment port to reduce costs oftransport to the centres in the region. However, the Government should considercoal import sources and vessel capacity.-VNA
