Conference discusses just energy transition in Vietnam

A conference themed “Just Energy Transition: From Research to Practice” was held in Hanoi on June 26 to share research results in just energy transition in Vietnam and share international experience in this issue.

Hanoi (VNA) –A conference themed “Just Energy Transition: From Research to Practice” washeld in Hanoi on June 26 to share research results in just energy transition inVietnam and share international experience in this issue.

The event was jointlyheld by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), theFriedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Vietnam Office, and the Green Innovation andDevelopment Centre (GreenID).

VUSTA Vice PresidentNghiem Vu Khai said the transition from fossil-based energies to renewable onesis an inevitable trend, for not only climate targets but also economic, socialand environmental benefits.

Vietnam has issuednumerous policies encouraging renewable energy development, and experienced aboom in solar power projects.

GreenID Director NguyThi Khanh stated that just energy transition is the transformation from largedependence on fossil-based fuel to the development and use of renewable energyeffectively, thus helping ensure energy security and reduce gas emissions.

Sharing internationalexperience, delegates from Germany and South Africa said that energy transitionis necessary to achieve targets set in the Paris Agreement and sustainable developmentgoals. However, conflicts on economics and land will occur during thetransition process.

Domestic and foreign expertsand scientists also focused discussions on a roadmap to implement just energytransition in Vietnam, while making recommendations to build relevant policiesafter 2020.

They stressed the needto set up a State-level coordination mechanism to boost inter-sectoralcooperation, and build and implement the roadmap; and issue preferentialpolicies to use energies effectively and develop renewable energies.-VNA
