Thanh said thatthe Vietnamese economy is still facing difficulties, with 55,000enterprises entering bankruptcy and 25 percent of companies posting onthe stock market failing to make a profit.

Over thepast years, Vietnam has issued and implemented a number of laws onscience and technology, creating an important legal corridor forbusinesses to apply technology in their management and production, henoted.

This is a good opportunity for Vietnameseexperts and managers to learn experience from the Republic of Korea– a country that succeeded in the field – thus developing their ideasto improve competitiveness for businesses.

Accordingto Pham Ngoc Hung, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City BusinessAssociation, Vietnam has deeply integrated into the internationaleconomy, while products from ASEAN member countries are soon to enterVietnam with zero percent tax rate.

Therefore, hesaid, it is crucial for Vietnamese businesses to enhance theircompetitiveness through improving product quality and the productivityof their factories.

However, as the majority ofenterprises are using old fashioned equipment and have poor access tomarket information and consultation services, their application ofstandards remains dependent on foreign partners, he said.

Healso suggested that the government should design policies to supportbusinesses by issuing technical standards and providing guidelines abouthow to meet them.

Within the seminar framework, theKSA and the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Development Centre(SMEDEC), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, signed amemorandum of understanding allowing the two sides to coordinate insupporting small and medium-sized enterprises to approach newtechnology, increasing productivity and products quality and developingenvironmentally friendly products.
