Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam's permanent mission to the United Nations opened acondolence book for former President Gen. Le Duc Anh in New York on May 3.
Maria Luiza Viotti,Chef de Cabinet to UN Secretary General António Guterres, sent a representativeto pay tribute to the former Vietnamese leader and write in the funeral book,affirming that former President Le Duc Anh will go down in Vietnam’s history asa talented and respected leader.
Ambassadors of severalcountries such as Laos, Cuba, Singapore and Australia also came to themission’s headquarters to pay homage to Gen. Anh.
On the same day, theVietnamese Embassy in the US also held a solemn respect-paying ceremony andopened the funeral book for him.
Crowds ofrepresentatives from the US administration, organisations and diplomatic missionsof many countries in Washington DC came to pay tribute to the former VietnamesePresident.
Susan Parker-Burns,Acting Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of State, extended her profoundcondolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that under theleadership of the former President, Vietnam and the US made important stepsforwards towards reconciliation and establishment of cooperative ties, layingimportant foundations for the current good relationship between the twocountries.
In the funeral book, Chairwomanof the Board and CEO of the National League of POW/MIA Families AnnMills-Griffiths affirmed that President Le Duc Anh had made great contributionsto building the US-Vietnam relations, including supporting and promotingVietnam’s humanitarian policies on POW/MIA work,
Memorial services forformer President Le Duc Anh were also held by the Vietnamese Embassies inArgentina, Mexico, Italy, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Mozambique,Ukraine, Bangladesh and Canada.
General Le Duc Anh,who served as President of Vietnam from September 1992 to December 1997, passedaway on April 22 at the age of 99.
