Global media covers Vietnam’s reunification milestone

The Laonewspaper “People” on April 30 wrote that the 1975 spring victory, thedecisive end to North Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Campaign, completelydefeated the US forces, liberating southern Vietnam and reunifying thenation thanks to the solidarity, bravery and patriotism of those whofought.

Other newspapers such as “Laos Nation”,“Laos Development”, and “New Vientiane” hailed the victory on April 30,1975, as a bright symbol of the unshakable solidarity among the peoplesof Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

China’s Xinhua NewsAgency reported on the April 30 ceremony marking the liberation andreunification in Ho Chi Minh City, describing it as one of the mostimportant Vietnamese events of 2015.

It cited PrimeMinister Nguyen Tan Dung’s speech at the ceremony, in which he saidthat the victory heralded a new era of independence, reunification anddevelopment which has transformed Vietnam into a strong nation withprosperous people and a just, democratic, and civilised society.

In its story, Japan’s Kyodo news agency underlined the PM’s call uponthe young to uphold former generations’ revolutionary cause bycontributing to national development. The newswire also mentioned thewar pain Vietnam endured as well as the support by China and the SovietUnion in the past.

Meanwhile, the US’s AP newsagency said that the moment North Vietnamese tanks crashed through thegates of Saigon’s presidential palace on April 30, 1975 marked anincredible victory for the revolutionary forces that had waged guerrillawarfare for more than a decade against the US.

Vietnam’s commemoration of 40 years since the liberation andreunification was also given widespread coverage on the websites ofSpiegel and DW and television channel N24 in Germany.

The celebrations also made headlines in stories published by Mexico’sNotimex news agency and Argentina’s Clarin, Pagina 12 and La Voznewspapers.-VNA
