Global partners support Vietnam’s agriculture restructuring plan

International partners have pledged to assist Vietnam in restructuring its agricultural sector, following an action plan unveiled by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat in Hanoi on August 29, prioritising cultivation, animal husbandry and seafood.

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) hasprovided technical assistance to the ministry on the development of thescheme.

The organisation will give support oninstitutional reform, climate change adaptation, science and technology,the formulation of sustainable regulations on goods and services, andthe implementation of effective agriculture and food systems, FAOVietnam representative Lan Huong said.

Nguyen TheDung, a representative of the World Bank in Vietnam, said the bank isbacking a “Sustainable agriculture transformation in Vietnam” (VnSAT)project.

The WB proposes that in future the projectfocus on rice production in the Mekong Delta and coffee in the CentralHighlands, as well as enhancing the restructuring of the agriculturesector and supporting initiatives for the sustainable production ofthese crops.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Government hasfunded the implementation of a technical and policy support project torestructure agriculture in Vietnam .

The countryis committed to supporting Vietnam in the field, Canadian AmbassadorDavid Devine said, noting that incentives in agriculture, particularlyin the field of advanced technology and environmental services, wouldattract more Canadian investors.-VNA
