The global situation’s impacts on East Sea disputes and recent developments related to the East Sea issue were analysed at an international conference in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on Nov.23.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (VNA) – The global situation’s impacts on East Sea disputes and recent developments related to the East Sea issue w🥃ere analysed at an international conference in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on November 23.
Among 14 reports and 40 opinions at the event, many scholars and participants shared the view that the global situation had certain impacts on East Sea disputes. All countries benefit from peace and stability in the East Sea and want to safeguard the navigation and aviation freedom and safety there. They also want to promote maritime cooperation, particularly in sea-based economic activities.
On the other hand, there are disagreements and lack of trust among countries in the region in terms of legal term explanation and unclear boundaries, which may result in misunderstanding and conflicts.
Some participants highlighted recent progress in the demarcation of overlapping waters and joint exploiting activities among the countries bordering the East Sea. They applauded efforts to solve disputes through peaceful measures, including the recent decision of a tribunal over a case between the Philippines and China.
Meanwhile, other delegates voiced concerns over China’s illegal large-scale island reclamation, runway building and possible military equipment installment on artificial constructions in the East Sea.
They feared that the new developments might trigger an arms race in the waters and threaten peace and security in the region.
With regard to the East Sea’s outlook, scholars said major conflicts are unlikely, but the regional security structure is in a dilemma.
They called on all concerned parties to have multilateral approaches, respect regional security forums and small and medium nations, and comply with international law.
The 7th East Sea international conference was held by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, the Foundation for East Sea Studies and the Vietnam Lawyers Association. It will continue on November 24.-VNA
Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan met with US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert Blake in Jakarta on November 19 to discuss security in the East Sea.
Australia and Japan expressed their concerns over the increasing tensions in the East Sea and reiterated strong opposition to any coercive actions that would change the status quo in the waters.
