Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi recorded 95 people contractingdengue fever between the beginning of 2018 and May 13, much lower than the sameperiod last year.

The figure was released by the municipal Health Department,which warned humidity, heat and rains in summer are favourable for the growthof mosquitoes.

The department urged localities to be proactive in carryingout anti-mosquito measures to curb the disease.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of aninfected mosquito, with no specific vaccine and treatment established to date.

By contrast, the period saw 356 cases diagnosed with hand-foot-mouthdisease, reflecting an annual increase in number.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness thatusually affects infants and children younger than five. However, it cansometimes occur in older children and adults. There is no vaccine to protectagainst the virus.

The Hanoi Health Department recommended local authoritiespay more attention to vaccination work and monitoring the developments of thedisease, along other diseases, including rubella, whooping cough, and Japaneseencephalitis.-VNA
