HCM City, Cuba hold great potential for cooperation: experts

HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi MinhCity and Cuba hold great potential for stronger cooperation, especially in thefields of trade and investment, experts said at a workshop in HCM City on April4.

Omar de Jesus Fernandez Jimenez, GeneralSecretary of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce, said Cuba is resolved to reform itseconomy with many open policies and strong changes, aiming to shift from aplanned economy to a market one.

The move is expected to create moremomentum for trade and increase the export of products such as medicalservices, functional food, high-tech agriculture and tourism, he said.

Meanwhile, HCM City has been known as amajor economic hub of Vietnam, with busy trade, tourism and investmentactivities, he added.

Fernandez Jimenez stressed that Vietnam,and HCM City in particular, and Cuba have huge potential for collaboration inhealth care, pharmaceutical products, biology, agriculture, telecommunications,food production, garments-textiles, footwear and consumer goods.

Cuba is stepping up specific targetsregarding the expansion and diversification of relations with foreigncountries, and boosting the export of goods and services, he said, adding thatthe country is also working hard to improve its investment environment in orderto attract more foreign investors.

Cuba wants to import more products andservices from HCM City like processed food, garments-textiles and consumergoods, he said.

Indira Lopez Arguelles, Cuban ConsulGeneral in HCM City, said apart from agriculture, Cuba is developing newspheres such as bio-technology, tourism, health care, arts, beverages andprofessional services in an effort to join the global market chain.

She pointed out obstacles hinderingeconomic and trade ties between Vietnam and Cuba such as far geographicaldistance, cultural differences and lack of information exchange betweenbusinesses of the two sides.

However, she said, over the past time,Vietnamese and Cuban busisnesses have actively sought cooperation opportunitiesin economy, trade and investment.

Currently, Vietnam is Cuba’s secondlargest trade partner in Asia-Pacific, with increased bilateral tradeactivities and diversified imports and exports.

Vietnamese firms such as Thai Binh,Viglacera, Hanel and Tin Thanh have gained a firm foothold in the Caribbeancountry in the fields of construction, tourism and renewable energy.

Pham Thiet Hoa, Director of the HCM CityInvestment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), said the special relationshipbetween Vietnam and Cuba is developing fruitfully.

The friendship and cooperation betweenHCM City and Cuban localities have also seen progress, with more and moreenterprises from the city showing their interest in the Caribbean market, he said.

Besides, the bilateral free tradeagreement signed on November 9, 2018 will help businesses of both sides increaseexchanges, contributing to raising the efficiency of economic cooperation inparticular and the friendship between the two countries in general, headded.-VNA
