HCM City (VNA) – A ceremony was held in District1, HCM City on February 6 to bid farewell to 3,000 needy students returninghome for the Lunar New Year (Tet).

The event is part of the programme “Spring bus journey”organised by the municipal chapters of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, theVietnam Fatherland Front and the Vietnam Students' Association of HoChi Minh City.

Quach Hai Dat, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City StudentAssistance Centre (SAC) said in 2018, the centre mobilised 2.5 billion VND tobuy bus tickets to send 3,000 needy students home for Tet.

It also presented 2,000 gifts to those who have to spend theholiday far from their families.

Le Thi Hang, from Bo Trach, the central province of QuangBinh, one of the students, expressed her happiness to receive the bus ticket,saying that she couldn’t afford one, because of her family’s difficultiescaused by floods.

“I am so happy. The programme is so meaningful, givingstudents in need like me a chance to enjoy the traditional Tet festival withour families,” Hang said.

The programme is an annual event hosted by the SAC under themunicipal chapter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

Since its launching in 2002, the programme has helped over47,000 needy students.-VNA
