Investment in startup projects doubles in 2017

Vietnam recorded 92 startup investment deals worth more than 290 million USD in 2017, with the total value doubling that of 2016.

HCM City (VNA) – Vietnam recorded92 startup investment deals worth more than 290 million USD in 2017, with thetotal value doubling that of 2016.

According to the Topica Founder Institute’sstatistics for last year, of the total deals, eight were successfully divestedvia merger and acquisition (M&A) contracts worth 128 million USD.

There were about 40 investment funds, mostlyforeign-based, operating in Vietnam.

Despite substantial growth, the capitalpoured into startup projects in Vietnam remained small compared to the regionand the world.

The number of investment transactions inVietnam was increasing, but transactions with less than 1 million USD made upthe majority.

Few of the investments were worth more than10 million USD. The number of merger and acquisition (M&A) deals was verysmall. No startup made an initial public offering (IPO).

The Government has employed many regulationsto support startups, especially innovative startups, including Decree 38/2018/ND-CPon innovative startup investment.

A representative from  Ministry of Planning and Investment, saidDecree 38 identified and recognised innovative startup investment activities asa business and identified the legal status of innovative startups and funds.-VNA
