Japan helps develop agriculture in Mekong Delta

The Japanese government will provide 3.9 million USD for a project that will help farmers in the Mekong Delta region to improve farming system and cultivation techniques.

The project’s signing ceremony was held in southern Tien Giang provinceon July 21 between the Southern Fruit Research Institute (SOFRI) andthe Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

SOFRI director Nguyen Minh Chau said the project will provide technicalassistance and experience in the planting of citrus fruit trees for thefive Mekong Delta provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Soc Trang, TraVinh and Ben Tre.

The project which was launch earlier this year and will run to 2014 aims to raise local people’s living standards.

The Mekong Delta region currently has more than 73,000 ha of citrusfruit trees, making up 27.4 percent of the total 282,000 ha of fruittrees./.
