Lawmakers urged to promote proper solutions to climate change

HCM City  (VNA) – Delegates tothe Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Asia-Pacific conference on response toclimate change have stressed the need to raise lawmakers’ awareness of linkagesamong climate change, gender inequality and health care, thereby building lawsto promote appropriate solutions to climate change response.

Deputy Minister of Planning andInvestment Nguyen The Phuong said Vietnam will focus on fine-tuning policies toensure sufficient legal framework for the fulfillment of the Plan of Action andVietnam’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).

At the same time, goals set in theNational Action Plan to implement the Agenda 2030 will be incorporated into the2016-2020 socio-economic development plan, he said.

According to him, in order to achieve17 SDGs, Vietnam will face challenges arising from limited financial resourcesand needs support from the international community to improve its institutionalcapacity.

Lawmakers should have awareness oflinkages among climate change, gender inequality and health care, therebybuilding laws to promote proper solutions to climate change response, delegatessaid.

Shoko Ishikawa, representative fromthe UN Agency on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment and head of the NA’sCommittee on Social Affairs Nguyen Thuy Anh shared the view that women are morevulnerable to climate change.

Anh said nearly 80 percent of Vietnam’spopulation in rural areas lives on agriculture – which is impacted by thechanging climate while agricultural land accounts for about 74 percent of thetotal.

Participants expressed concern overincreasingly serious intensity and frequency of climate change, which theysaid, could reduce the world’s gross domestic product by 5-10 percent.

They urged Asian-Pacific nations towork closely together and make clear commitments to climate change reduction bypooling all possible resources for the effort and strengthening collaborationin technology research and transfer.

They vowed to raise theirresponsibility and role in refining relevant laws and step up serious deliveryof commitments and international agreements on climate change, towardsrealising the Paris Agreement and contributing to the sustainable developmentof Asian-Pacific countries. - VNA
