LED technology lures foreign investment

Foreign investors have shown their interest in production of lighting systems using light-emitting diode (LED) technology which are 30-90 percent more efficient than incandescent light bulbs.
Foreign investors have shown their interest in production of lightingsystems using light-emitting diode (LED) technology which are 30-90percent more efficient than incandescent light bulbs.

At the recent Environment and Energy Technology (ENTECH) Hanoi 2013Exhibition, China ’s Hua Bo Industrial Company said it will build afive million USD factory in Vietnam to produce LED lights.

The company has applied for an investment certificate, which isexpected to be granted in the next one or two months. It will startoperation next September, with over 200 types of LED lights and devicesused in the electronics industry.

According to theVietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Hua Bo’s project isone of numerous LED projects to come to Vietnam in the coming time.

The adoption of LED technology in other countries aswell as in Vietnam proves that this technology will graduallyreplace traditional household lighting.

At present, there are only a few foreign companies investing in factories inVietnam to manufacture LEDs, most businesses import the products fromother countries to distribute in Vietnam .

Thefirst company to manufacture LED products in Vietnam is Green PowerKim Dinh (Fawoo Kidi), a joint venture of Vietnam ’s Kim Dinh companyand Fawoo from the Republic of Korea .

Thecompany has been successfully installing LED lighting systems atnumerous large works such as Thuan Phuoc bridge in Da Nang city, HoaLac hi-tech park in Hanoi , and the Hi-Tech Park in Ho Chi Minh City.

Nguyen Thi Bac Kinh, an expert from VAST , saidthe performances of several world-class companies in LED technology suchas Philips, LG, Osram and Nitria in Vietnam are very good.

According to an Osram representative, the company’s revenue inVietnam is 7.5 million USD per year. It is now deploying a range ofprojects in many five-star hotels in Vietnam , including Sheraton,Sofitel Plaza , Metropole Plaza , Hilton and Movenpick in Hanoi ,Sheraton, Kum Ho, Saigon Centre and Liberty Riverside in Ho Chi MinhCity .

Osram is only involved with high-classprojects, since the price of LED lighting is still higher than normalproducts, he added.

Kinh said the high price of LED lights is limiting their appearance in households and public works.

To ensure the effectiveness and sustainable development of Vietnam’s high efficiency lighting market, Chairman of the VAST Science andTechnology Council Phan Hong Khoi stressed the necessity of support forthe domestic lighting industry, to approach and master the modernlighting technology, especially LED technology.

Accordingly, the State should list lighting manufacturing using LEDtechnology in the high technology field, upgrade the two quality checklaboratories from national to international standards, and build anational quality standard for LED light sets.

Moreimportantly, there must be incentive and support policies forenterprises and research institutes to approach and develop highefficiency lighting technology in general and LED technology inparticular, he added.-VNA
