Lumitel – A bright spot in Vietnam-Burundi collaboration

After a decade of operations, Lumitel has become the leading telecommunications provider in Burundi and one of the largest contributors to the Burundian government's budget, providing stable employment for over 60,000 workers and indirectly creating around 100,000 jobs.

Hanoi (VNA) – The official visit to Vietnam by Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye from April 3-6 is expected to help strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, which remains quite modest, between the two countries.

As the first visit by a head of state of Burundi to Vietnam, it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (April 16, 1975 - 2025), demonstrating the desire to further enhance the friendship and collaboration in various fields, including politics, economy, trade, culture, and society.

Sharing many similarities in history and culture, Vietnam and Burundi possess significant potential for cooperation in economy, trade, and investment.

A standout success in bilateral collaboration is Viettel Group’s 2014 investment of 200 million USD in Burundi’s telecom sector. Since establishing operations in 2013 as a joint venture with 85% ownership, Viettel launched its mobile network under the Lumitel brand across Burundi in June 2015. After a decade of operations, Lumitel has become the leading telecommunications provider in Burundi and one of the largest contributors to the Burundian government's budget, providing stable employment for over 60,000 workers and indirectly creating around 100,000 jobs. Burundian leaders have lauded Lumitel for its role in fostering Vietnam-Burundi relations.

The year 2024 marked a breakthrough in growth for Lumitel, with it being the second-largest taxpayer in Burundi. Over more than 11 years of operation, it has contributed over 286.5 million USD in taxes to the national budget.

Despite difficulties, the company is the only network provider continuing to invest in additional 4G stations, with 106 new stations launched, increasing the 4G coverage to 26%, which helps bring internet access to more than 50% of the population.

It is also the only network provider in Burundi to be granted free 5G frequency license, that helps save over 1 million USD, open up business opportunities and further solidify its position as a pioneer in leading digital technology.

Additionally, Lumitel continues to sponsor free internet connectivity for 261 schools, public health centres, and 40 video conference points, in line with its commitment to the Government of Burundi. It funds a clean water well project valued at approximately 1 million USD.

ဣ Since March 2024, the company has launched a monthly charitable programme, providing tuition fees, school bags, and books for orphanages./.
