Mega Market hopes to double imports from Vietnam

😼According to the director general of the MM Mega Market Vietnam, in 2019, the company will double its farm produce imports from Vietnam, to 200 tonnes each month.

The MM Mega market Vietnam hopes to double both of its scale and exports from Vietnam. The information was revealed by Phidsanu Pongwatana, Director General of the MM MegaMarket Vietnam, at a working session between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the company in Hanoi on August 8. After the first year exporting Vietnam’s farm produce to the big C Thailand system and receiving positive feedback from the market, the MM Mega Market Vietnam in 2019 has doubled its farm produce imports to about 200 tonnes per month.
Vietnam’s farm produce exported by the MM Mega market to Thailand and other markets in the region include frozen tra fish, squid, milk fruit, star-apple fruit, green-peel grapefruit and dragon fruit. By now, the firm has signed contracts with farmers to provide farm produce to the supply chain in Vietnam, like the vegetable and fruit platform in Da Lat. Besides, the MM Mega Market Vietnam are turning its eye to the export of Vietnam’s farm produce like dragon fruit, sweet potato and chilly to new markets outside Thailand, and signing contract with farming households in Dong Nai province to buy pork. The products require top quality and safety, that is why the firm is working very closely with farmers to ensure the every procedure, towards more export,” the MM Mega Market Vietnam director general said. For the side of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Deputy Minister Do Thang Hai said the signing of the memorandum of understanding is to strengthen the cooperation between the ministry and the firm in the purchase of Vietnam’s products, especially farm produce, for consumption in the system of the firm in Vietnam and for export.
Under the document, the sides pledge to connect with prestigious firms and producers so as to ensure about 90 percent of the products in the MM Mega Market central system in Vietnam are the country’s ones. They will also closely join hands in organizing annual events to popularise Vietnam’s products at international distribution networks of the parent company, and support Vietnamese firms and producers to improve the quality of their products, thus meeting the criteria, standards, provisions and requirements of the distributors. The cooperation is a follow-up of the success of cooperation between the ministry and the major foreign invested distributors in Vietnam like AEON, Central Group and Lotte in supporting Vietnamese producers to develop their domestic and foreign markets. MM Mega Market Vietnam (formerly Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam) started its wholesale operations locally in 2002. After transferring from Metro Group to Thai Charoen Corporation Group, it has been making strong and continuing investments in developing commercial infrastructure as well as food safety in Vietnam. The company has provided training for over 20,000 Vietnamese farmers and fishermen to increase productivity and product safety to achieve better access to modern trade practices and upgrade capacity in the long term.
Recently, the company has got 19 stores and five platforms nationwide with nearly 4,000 employees, out of which, over 99 percent are Vietnamese staff. So far, it has trained and developed more than 15,000 high-quality personnel for the modern trade sector. In addition, the company has been supporting university students looking for internships and career opportunities. It was selected as the No.1 employer in retail/distribution sector in 2014./.
