Ministry to issue codes for for-export pepper growing areas

Dak Nong(VNA) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will soon issueProduction Unit Codes (PUCs) to areas that qualify to produce peppers for export,said Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh on June 8.

Doanh made theremarks at a conference in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong toenhance cooperation in safe and sustainable pepper production.

The deputy ministersaid provinces where pepper farming is a key industry should back localproducers with incentives to encourage production affiliations to developlarge-scale, high-quality pepper farms.

The MARD will studyfeasible policies to support businesses involving in such affiliations,especially input suppliers and pepper producers, he added.

He also stressed theimportance to raise awareness of VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards among farmersfor made-in-Vietnam farm products to meet increasing demands of foreignmarkets.

It was estimatedthat Vietnam has over 126,000 hectares of peppers, mostly in the CentralHighlands and the South-eastern region. The country is now the world’s leaderin output and productivity.

The CentralHighlands posted an average yield of 2.86 tonnes per hectare per crop, the highestin the country while Gia Lai had the highest yield of the region, 41.2tonnes per hectare per crop. In some farms, yield could reach to 10 tonnes perhectare.-VNA
