Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued a directive requiring ministries, sectors and localities to carry out more drastic measures to ensure traffic safetไy on the remaining days of the lunar New Year holiday, or February 11-14.

In the document, Phuc, who is Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, asked transport police to intensify patrols and inspections to address traffic violations regarding drink driving, speeding and helmets.
They were instructed to deploy officers to roads and key expressways prone to heavy congestion, particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, when people return for work after the holiday.
Local transport departments have also been urged to tighten inspections over the quality of transportation services and vehicles. From February 7-10, 161 traffic accidents occurred across the nation, killing 101 people and injuring 163. The figures represent a decrease of 34.8 percent in the number of cases, 28.9 percent in fatalities and 33.7 percent in injuries in comparison with the last lunar year holiday.-VNA
