Multilateral diplomacy forms an important part of VN’s policy on external relations, said the PM.
Multilateral diplomacy forms an important part of Vietnam’s policy onexternal relations and international integration, said Prime MinisterNguyen Tan Dung at a multilateral diplomacy conference which opened inHanoi on August 12.

The government leader said multilateraldiplomacy is an effective way to carry out Vietnam’s foreign policy ofindependence, self-reliance, multilateralism, diversification andinternational integration.

Multilateral institutions and forumsare platforms for the country to protect and promote security anddevelopment interests; join hands with the international community todeal with global challenges; and build equal and mutually beneficiarypartnerships, he added.

PM Dung highlighted the importance of therole and the voice of multilateral institutions and forums, especiallythe United Nations, ASEAN, and the Non-Aligned Movement, in thecountry’s cause of safeguarding national sovereignty.

Theinternational community’s solidarity and support at multilateral forumshave helped uphold Vietnam’s stance of solving disputes through peacefulmeasures in line with international law and conduct principles, henoted.

The leader asked participants at the conference to findout substantive measures to help Vietnam boost multilateral diplomacy soas to serve the national development, and expressed hope for moreassistance from regional and international organisations to the country.

Thefirst conference on multilateral diplomacy was also attended byDeputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, formerDirector General of the World Trade Organisation Pascal Lamy, formerUnited Nations Under-Secretary General Jayantha Dhanapala and formerSingaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo, along with some 200 delegatesfrom Vietnam and other countries.

Participants are expected toreview the country’s achievements over the past three decades ofexpanding multilateral external relations and discuss the implementationof this policy in the coming time.

The event will includediscussions on such issues as major trends of multilateral diplomacy inthe 21st century, multilateral cooperation in promoting sustainabledevelopment, multilateral trade system, policies suggestions for Vietnamand ASEAN, and Vietnam’s international economic integration.-VNA
