Myanmar has new Speaker of Union Parliament

Speaker of Myanmar's House of Representative (Lower House) U Shwe Mann on July 31 became the new Speaker of the Union Parliament in place of U Khin Aung Myint who finished his two-and-a-half-year term in the post, the country’s parliament source said.

U Khin Aung Myint will continue to serve as Speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House).

U Shwe Mann, also the chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity andDevelopment Party (USDP), will run for the remaining two and a halfyears' term for the current five-year tenure of President U Thein Sein's government.

Myanmar’s Union Parliamentbegan its seventh session on July 1 in Nay Pyi Taw. During the session,the parliament has adopted a proposal to form a 109-member ConstitutionReview Joint Committee.

The session also approved the appointment of the Governor and Vice Governor of the state bank of Myanmar.-VNA
