Hanoi (VNA) –Vietnam will continue to be a responsible member of the United Nations (UN) whoactively joins its activities to ensure peace, stability, cooperation and development,said permanent Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong onOctober 26.
She made the statement during a reception inHanoi for UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam and UN Development Programme’sResident Representative to Vietnam Kamal Malhotra.
Phong spoke highly of the UN’s support toVietnam’s socio-economic development, especially in the fields of povertyreduction, HIV/AIDS prevention and control, child care and protection, disasterprevention, climate change response, administrative reform and improvement ofVietnam’s capacity in global integration. The support contributes to the promotionof the country’s sustainable development, she highlighted.
The host stressed that over the past more thanfour decades of membership of the UN, Vietnam has always been an active,proactive and responsible member, well performing roles assigned by thebloc. She lauded the UN for, via its representative offices in Vietnam, providingeffective support for the Vietnamese legislature’s operation, includinglaunching projects with some of its committees and working with theInter-Parliamentary Union to build a set of tools for lawmakers to assess theachievement of the UN sustainable development goals.
Malhotra, for his part, reaffirmed the UN’scommitment to working closely with the Vietnamese NA to promote its supervisoryand law-making role and realise the 2030 UN Agenda for SustainableDevelopment.-VNA
