NAM calls on US to lift embargo against Cuba

Member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) have called on the US to put an end to its embargo against Cuba, saying that this policy is damaging the Cuban economy, a statement issued by the NAM Summit’s Secretariat said on July 13.

The statement said that the US ’s economic, trade and financial embargoon Cuba violated the United Nations Charter and international laws andcaused difficulties, economic losses and negative impacts to thewelfare of the people of the Caribbean nation.

The NAM also urged the US Government to immediately abide by the UN Resolutions to end its embargo on Cuba .

The NAM Summit themed “International Solidarity for Peace andDevelopment” is slated for July 15 and 16 in the Egyptian city ofSharm-el-Sheikh .

Founded in 1961, the NAM now groups 118 members. It represents nearlytwo-thirds of the UN members and comprises 55 percent of the world’spopulation. Its activities focus on struggling for the interests ofdeveloping nations around the world./.
