Nearly 1.3 million poor, near-poor households provided with social policy bank loans

Hanoi (VNA) – Nearly 1.3 million poor andnear-poor households had got access to loans from the Vietnam Bank for SocialPolicies (VBSP) to cope with COVID-19 in the first half of this year.
VBSP General Director Duong Quyet Thang said thebank’s total credit loans stood at 247.34 trillion VND (10.3 billion USD), up13.91 trillion VND from the previous year.
The bank granted loans worth 48.21 trillion VND (over 2 billion USD) in thefirst two quarters to serve production and business, improve people’s livingstandards, and deal with the impacts of the pandemic, contributing to povertyreduction, new-style rural area building and social welfare.
The loans have also helped to create jobs for nearly249,000 labourers, including 1,600 guest workers, and provided support for over16,000 students in difficult circumstances.
Up to 879,000 water supply and sanitation facilities,and 3,600 houses for social policy beneficiaries were also built with theloans./.
Financial relief packages and free supply of rice and other essential goods are among the many initiatives being taken by the Government and charity organisations to help workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung proposed the World Bank continue to help Vietnam in addressing core issues in social welfare, poverty reduction, and in narrowing the gap between regions at his meeting with WB Country Director for Vietnam Carolyn Turk on June 17.
