Over 1,700 wildlife violations recorded in 2019

The Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV) recorded 1,777 violations related to wild animal protection in 2019, according to deputy director of ENV Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung.

– The Education forNature Vietnam (ENV) recorded 1,777 violations related to wild animalprotection in 2019, according to deputy director of ENV Nguyen Thi Phuong Dung.

The figure includes 146 transporting, 979trading and advertising, and 610 illegal captivity cases, she said.

Nearly 600 cases were reported by locals, Dungsaid, adding that authorities seized 321 wildlife animals alive.

The penalty for trafficking, trading andcapturing wild animals in 2019 was increased from the previous years. 

For example, in March, a man from the northernprovince of Nam Dinh was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison forsmuggling 10 oriental small-clawed otters (Amblonyx cinerea).

In late May, a man from the central province ofQuang Tri was given 15-month suspended prison sentences for illegally tradingeight bear nails on social networks.

In October, a man from the Central Highlandprovince of Kon Tum and another from the central province of Nghe An weresentenced to 5 years, and 5 years and six months in prison respectively fortrafficking seven Java pangolins. 

In November, a person from the northern provinceof Quang Ninh was sentenced to 13 years in prison for keeping in captivity andsmuggling 145 Java pangolins, seven kg of Java pangolin scales, and 71.4 kg ofelephant skin.

To protect wild animals, the ENV suggestedintensifying inspections and punishment, while strictly controlling the raisingof wild animals for commercial purposes./.

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

💟 Wutip storm ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of destruction

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
