The Party chief made the statement during his pre-Tet visit to HCM City on Jan. 29.

Hestressed that the city is always leading the way in importanthistorical events and has made great contributions to past struggles fornational liberation and reunification.

The Party leader praised the great achievements recorded by the municipal Party Committee, authorities, people and armed forces.

Politburomember and Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai saidthe city has attained an annual economic growth of over 11 percent overthe past five years, 1.5 times the country’s average.

The city’seconomy has been boosted by growth in imports-exports, foreign directinvestment and official development assistance (ODA), Hai added.

However,he pointed out major challenges and difficulties to the city, includingincreasing traffic congestion which has severely affected people’slives, and worsening flooding due to the impact of climate change.

Onthis occasion, Party General Secretary Trong visited Vo Chi Cong,former Politburo member and former President of the State Council, andburnt incense to Nguyen Van Linh, the late Party General Secretary, andNguyen Huu Tho, the late acting State President and NA Chairman, attheir private houses.

In Hanoi, State President Nguyen Minh Trietmade pre-Tet visits to former Party General Secretaries Do Muoi and LeKha Phieu and former State Presidents Le Duc Anh and Tran Duc Luong.
