Hanoi (VNA) – The Politburo and the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee convened a meeting under the chair of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam in Hanoi on September 9 to discuss the settlement of consequences of super typhoon Yagi.

Typhoon Yagi, the third to enter the East Sea this year, was the strongest storm in the waters over the last 30 years and also reportedly sustained the fastest wind speed in the world so far this year. It has taken a heavy toll across localities in the northern region.

The Politburo reviewed response efforts over the past days, considered possible risks, and outlined immediate as well as long-term tasks.

It emphasised the spirit that the entire political system and people must stay vigilant, proactively gear up response plans in case of abnormal and dangerous weather conditions, and mobilise every resource for ensuring safety and stabilising people’s life.

On behalf of the Politburo and Secretariat, General Secretary and President Lam hailed the great efforts by the Government, the Prime Minister, ministries, sectors, localities, military and police forces, people, along with the media in coping with the typhoon.

He offered condolences to the bereaved families and expressed sympathies for those suffering from losses due to Yagi.

Given ongoing downpour, he asked the Government, ministries, sectors, and localities to continue maximising resources and forces to respond and minimise damage.

The affected localities need to set aside other activities to focus on quickly delivering relief, including food and clean water, to help people, especially those in isolated areas, overcome this trying time, he noted.

The leader also called on provinces and cities nationwide to help the affected localities provide sufficient food and essential supplies for all people; give timely assistance to the families with disadvantages, the elderly, small children, and sick persons; and pay due attention to the forces on duty.

At the meeting, Lam requested localities continue checking bridges and dykes to detect the places at risk of erosion to conduct timely reinforcement, properly coordinate with one another in floodwater release, and quickly recover traffic, communication, and electricity supply.

They were also told to keep deploying military, police, health, and transport personnel to carry out assistance, search, and rescue, particularly in disadvantaged areas, restore health and education establishments, ensure environmental hygiene, and prevent disease outbreaks.

The leader also stressed the need to engage the entire society in supporting people and businesses in the affected localities, push ahead with communications to help people stay updated with the situation to ready response measures, and enhance protecting local security and order./.
