Railway sector asked to reform mindset to boost development

Hanoi (VNA) – DeputyPrime Minister Le Van Thanh has requested the Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR)to make drastic reforms so as to address shortcomings and develop the sector furtherin the time ahead.
The Government Office onJanuary 6 released an announcement of the Deputy PM’s conclusion at a recentmeeting on rail transport.
According to the document, the railway sector is facing an array of difficulties andchallenges: the national infrastructure in this field has yet to receive dueinvestment, the sector’s market share been shrinking while road and airtransport booming, and the lingering COVID-19 pandemic greatly affectedinfrastructure upgrade, rail transportation of passengers, as well as the VNR’sperformance.
As the pandemic remainscomplicated, Deputy PM Thanh told the VNR to reform its mindset, take moredrastic and proactive moves, and adopt new solutions and methodology to dealwith outstanding problems and strongly develop the sector in the time ahead.
The State-owned enterpriseshould bravely propose breakthrough mechanisms, policies and solutions, turndifficulties and challenges into opportunities for development in the newcontext, conduct flexible transformation, and promptly build a new businessplan to optimise advantages of rail freight transportation to give timely assistanceto other modes of transport.
More attention should be paidto railway infrastructure development and efforts made to attract private resourcesto rail transport.
Meanwhile, the Ministry ofTransport and related ministries and agencies need to prioritise investment forrailway infrastructure and tackle difficulties to facilitate the sector’sdevelopment, the Deputy PM said./.
