Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has proposed total investment of 240 trillion VND (10.4 billion USD) for the expansion of the railway network from nowuntil 2030, to be sourced by the State budget and other legal sources.

The ministry has submitted a draft master plan on railway development until 2030, with avision to 2050, to the Prime Minister for approval, which aims to raise the sector's market share to 0.27 percent in cargotransportation and 4.4 percent in passenger transportation by 2030, Tuoi Tre (Youth) reported.

The volume of cargo transportation will achieve 11.8 million tonnes by 2030, up 2.3times over 2019’s figure while passenger transportation will reach 460 millionpeople.

To achieve this goal, the national railway network will be extended to 16routes with a total length of 4,871km. The number includes seven existingroutes and nine new lines.

The seven existing routes namely Hanoi-HCM City, Hanoi-Hai Phong, Yen Vien-LaoCai, Hanoi-Dong Dang, Hanoi-Thai Nguyen, Kep-Ha Long-Cai Lan, Kep-Luu Xa willbe upgraded to meet domestic transport demand. 

Among the nine new routes, the top priority is given to the North-Southhigh-speed railway project with a plan to build a double track railway of1,435mm size, stretching over 1,545km.

By 2050, the national railway network will consist of 25 routes witha total length of 6,409km, an increase of nine lines compared with 2030’splanning with an additional length of 1,538km.

According to Nguyen Ngoc Dong, Deputy Minister of Transport, the railwaynetwork planning for 2050 will basically not change much compared to the planapproved in Decision 1468/QD-TTg in 2015 of the Prime Minister./.
