Rice exports drop in volume but still rise in value
Vietnam’s rice exports by mid-September had declined 0.8 percent in volume but still grown 11.8 percent in value compared to the same period last year.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s rice exports bymid-September had declined 0.8 percent in volume but still grown 11.8 percentin value compared to the same period last year.
More than 4.8 million tonnes of rice had beenshipped abroad by September 15, bringing home 2.4 billion USD, according to theAgro Processing and Market Development Authority under the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development.
The revenue increase was partly attributed tohigher export prices which averaged 489.2 USD per tonne in the first ninemonths, up 12.4 percent year on year.
Besides, the country also recorded strongershipments of high-quality rice, with white rice making up 40.7 percent of thetotal value, Jasmine and fragrant rice 37.6 percent, glutinous rice 17.4percent, and Japonica rice and others of Japanese varieties 4.2 percent.
The Philippines, the largest buyer, imported1.72 million tonnes of Vietnamese rice worth 797.6 million USD in the January-Augustperiod, down 2.4 percent in volume but up 10.9 percent in value year onyear, accounting for 35.4 percent of total exports during the period.
Growth was also seen in rice shipments to other markets,including Senegal (up 3.55 times), Indonesia (2.9 times), and China (82.5percent), statistics showed./.
Vietnam’s rice exports to Africa rose sharply in the first six months of 2020 and are expected to continue surging in the remainder of the year and in 2021, according to Vietnamese Trade Counsellor in Algeria Hoang Duc Nhuan.
Vietnam’s rice exports to the EU remain modest, at about 20,000 tonnes in volume and 10.7 million USD in value in 2019, accounting for a small proportion of the bloc’s annual average rice consumption of 2.5 million tonnes in the 2016-2020 period.
