RoK President's new policy targets Southeast Asia

President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Moon Jae-in has announced his “New Southern Policy,” aiming to better connect the country to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and expand the economic influence of Asia’s fourth-largest economy in the 600-billion-population region.

Seoul (VNA) - President of the Republic of Korea(RoK) Moon Jae-in has announced his “New Southern Policy,” aiming tobetter connect the country to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) and expand the economic influence of Asia’s fourth-largest economy inthe 600-billion-population region.

The RoK's diplomacy in Asia has been more toward Japan, China and Russia, hesaid at a business forum in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 9, adding that thepolicy should be expanded and Indonesia is a promising country.

Explaining the new policy, an advisor of the President said that its mainobjective is to build a win-win partnership with 10 ASEAN member countries forpeople’s interest, common prosperity and peace. In the Southeast Asia, thepolicy focuses on development and economic issues.

The new policy was designed in the context that the RoK is seeking to reduceindependence on traditional partners such as China and the US. President Moonfirst mentioned the policy during the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia inSeptember, targeting stronger cooperation with China, Japan, Russia andMongolia.-VNA
