Second group of VN’s peacekeeping force sets off for South Sudan

A ceremony was held at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on October 15 to see off the second group of Vietnam’s first Level-2 field hospital to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. ​

HCM City (VNA) –A ceremony was held atTan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on October 15 to see offthe second group of Vietnam’s first Level-2 field hospital to the UnitedNations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Defence MinisterSen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, head of the steering committee of Vietnam’sUN peacekeeping operations, asked leaders of the hospital to ensure safety for thestaffers and carry forward the spirit of solidarity to successfully fulfiltasks assigned by the UN.

He also requested the Vietnam Department ofPeacekeeping Operations to implement policies towards families of the officersand soldiers, and pledged that the Defence Ministry will continue to coordinatewith relevant agencies and units to create the best possible conditions for thehospital to operate in South Sudan, contributing to raising the position andprestige of Vietnam and the Vietnam People’s Army in particular at theinternational arena.

The hospital is thefirst-ever independent unit of Vietnam to join the UN peacekeeping operations. It will replace the second-level field hospital of the UK army in Bentiu, SouthSudan, to provide medical care for staffers of the UN peacekeeping mission inSouth Sudan within one year.

On October 1, the firstgroup of the hospital with 30 members set off for the African country. 

On November 25, 2014,the Defence Ministry issued a decision to establish the Level-2 field hospitalwith a 70-strong staff, a step to realise the Party and State’s policy onjoining the United Nations’ peacekeeping activities in the field ofhumanitarian activities.-VNA
