An international seminar on cooperation for economic-tourism developmentin the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) was held in Dong Ha city, thecentral province of Quang Tri , on July 28.
As part of the 3 rd Trans-Asia Bridge Span Festival from July 28-30,the seminar drew the participation of representatives from Vietnam ,Laos , Thailand and Myanmar who share the corridor, as well asscientists and economic-tourism managers.
According to Le Trieu Dung, deputy head of the Multilateral Trade PolicyDepartment, under Vietnam ’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, theEWEC has brought practical and long-term benefits to its membercountries as well as opened up cooperation opportunities in variousfields for localities it runs through.
Participants assessed the EWEC’s considerable potential, advantages andopportunities for economic benefit, tourism and service development inlocalities along the corridor. The assessment can be used as foundationsfor these localities to develop suitable policies and measures.
They also put forth measures to boost the economic-tourismdevelopment on the EWEC, including promoting the corridor as a commondestination with joint advertisement strategies, and adopting policiesto facilitate travel in the region.
The EWECcountries should sign cooperation documents relating to their tourismprojects and accelerate the implementation of the existingVietnam-Laos-Thailand tri-party agreement on tourist transport, theysaid.
The EWEC is one of the three economiccorridor initiatives in the framework of the Greater Mekong Sub-region(GMS) cooperation initiated by the Asian Development Bank and Japan .
It was adopted at the 8 th GMS MinisterialMeeting held in the Philippines in October 1998 and included in theHanoi Action Programme at the 6 th ASEAN Summit in December 1998.
The 1,450km corridor starts from Mawlomyine port city of Myanmar andruns through Thailand and Laos, entering Vietnam via the Lao BaoInternational Border Gate in Quang Tri province and ends at Tien Sa portin Da Nang city.-VNA
