Spokeswoman: Countries call for sustainable peace in East Sea
Many countries expressed their concern over the situation in the East Sea and affirmed a need to maintain sustainable peace and long-term stability in the important waters, during the 37th ASEAN Summit and the 15th East Asia Summit (EAS), Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang has said.

Hanoi (VNA) – Many countries expressed their concern over thesituation in the East Sea and affirmed a need to maintain sustainable peace andlong-term stability in the important waters, during the 37th ASEANSummit and the 15th East Asia Summit (EAS), Foreign Ministry’sspokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang has said.
During the ministry’s regular press conference in Hanoi on November 19, shesaid that in order to reach such a goal, they called for the upholding of a senseof responsibility, in particular avoiding actions that could further exacerbatetension and complicate the situation, while refraining from militarisation.
Countries highlighted the need to uphold international law, includingthe 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which is alegal framework for every activity at sea and the settlement of disputes bypeaceful means.
She said countries urged ASEAN and China to step up the fullimplementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea(DOC) as well as efforts to resume negotiations on an effective and efficientCode of Conduct in the East Sea in line with international law, including the 1982UNCLOS.

The 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits concluded successfully, with a record number of 80 documents adopted and signed, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc told the press on November 15.
Many international maritime routes pass through the East Sea, making it the world’s second-busiest shipping lane in terms of commercial activities, after the Mediterranean. The sea, however, has been threatened with potential instability from frequent piracy, while sovereignty disputes over islands are becoming more complex.
The 12th South China Sea International Conference, with the theme “Maintaining Peace and Cooperation through a Time of Turbulence”, kicked off on November 16 in both the in-person and online formats.
