Thousands evacuated over severe floods in southern Philippines

Floods in the south of the Philippines as consequence of tropical storm Jangmi left one dead and forced thousands to evacuate, a Filipinos official said on December 29.

The storm, locally known asSeniang, landed at southern Surigao del Sur province on December 28bringing heavy rains and strong winds. As many as 4,000 people moved tosafer areas while 6,000 more may have to move on December 29.

In other localities such as Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental, severefloods also forced hundreds of families to leave their homes during thenight. Two flights from Manila to the region were cancelled due to badweather.

The Seniang is forecast to hit the central Philippines in the next two days.

Earlier this month, Super Typhoon Hagupit claimed 21 lives aftersweeping central provinces in the country. Last year, Super TyphoonHaiyan, one of the strongest storms recorded in history, lashed the sameregion, leaving 7,350 people dead or missing.-VNA
