Hanoi (VNA) - A transportroute connecting Quy Nhon Port in the south-central province of Binh Dinh withNortheast Asian countries is to open on June 3.
Ho Lien Nam, Head of the Sales Department at theQuy Nhon Port JSC, said the route will help the shipment of goods from the centraland Central Highlands regions to Northeast Asian markets, which are majorimporters of Vietnamese goods, in a shorter period of time.
He noted that up to 60 percent of commoditiesexported from Quy Nhon are wood chips, wood pellets, and tapioca.
However, the shipment of certain goods of highvalue, such as frozen fruit, has faced difficulties as there has not beendirect transport routes to those markets, Nam said, adding that such itemsusually have to transit in Singapore before being delivered to Northeast Asia, which lengthens the transport time, undermines the value of the goods, andraises delivery costs.
If the route from Quy Nhon Port to NortheastAsia operates well, such problems will be resolved and new operationaldirections for the port will be created, he said.
Some 1,400 containers with 17,000-19,000 tonnesof goods will initially be transported on the route every month. Trips willrise from one every week to two by about mid-August if demand increases.
Executives from Vietnam National Shipping Lines(Vinalines), which manages Quy Nhon Port, said the opening of the new routewill herald a new development stage for the central and Central Highlandsregions, including Binh Dinh province, as it will help facilitate trade withNortheast Asia by cutting transport time and cost and improving thecompetitiveness of Vietnamese goods compared to regional rivals.
Quy Nhon Port handled more than 2.4 milliontonnes of cargo in the first quarter of 2020, up 14 percent year-on-year. Revenuealso grew 18 percent year-on-year to 212 billion VND (9.1 million USD)./.
State-owned Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) has paid 415 billion VND (17.8 million USD) to reacquire a 75 percent stake in Quy Nhon Port JSC, which it had sold illegally to Hop Thanh Investment & Mineral JSC without the Government’s approval.
Vietnam’s sea transport sector has maintained good growth recently with the volume of goods transported by the Vietnamese fleet reaching more than 81 million tonnes in the first half of 2019, a year-on-year increase of 16 percent.
Quy Nhon port, after being handed over to Vietnam National Shipping Lines, will be invested to increase its loading and unloading capacity, extend the wharf and shorten the time for cargo handling.
