Hanoi (VNA) – The transport sector recorded positive growth in the first four months of this year, meeting requirements of socio-economic development, Director of the Ministry of Construction's Department of Transport and Traffic Safety Hoang Anh Tuan said at a review meeting on June 6.

Particularly, the number of rail passengers skyrocketed by 154%, reflecting the effectiveness of transport market share restructuring, Tuan said.

The volume of goods transported in the period reached 189 billion tonnes, marking an 11.5% increase year-on-year. This includes substantial growth across various sectors, specifically aviation by 14.5%; road, 15.7%; waterway, 12.1%; seaway, 11%; and railway, 5.5%.

Passenger turnover reached 101 billion persons-km, a 13% increase year-on-year. Specifically, aviation saw a rise of 9.7%, road transport grew by 18.7%, and waterway transport surged by 21%.

To maintain the growth momentum of transport output and services to support the country's economic growth of at least 8%, Tuan said in the second half of this year, his department will coordinate with specialised forces to study, review and announce transport routes and transport business licenses to ensure smooth operation in localities after their mergers.

The department will continue to review and propose amendments to laws to promote the application of digital transformation; study and develop a project for an interconnected transport database, integrating data from seaports, inland container depots (ICD), railway stations, airports, and wharves, among others, towards the formation of a transport trading floor in the coming years.

𓆏 It will also work with specialised management departments, and research agencies to propose adjustments to the master plan of the transport network to ensure compatibility with the new development space after the merger of provinces and cities. In particular, the content of the planning adjustment needs to focus on creating an interconnected axis of seaports - stations - logistics centres to effectively connect transport modes./.
