UN leader hails Vietnam’s contributions to UN system

Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has spoke of Vietnam’s responsible efforts and contributions at UN forums, including its participation in the UN Human Rights Council and peace-keeping operations.

He hadtalks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister PhamBinh Minh in Hanoi on May 23, during which they agreed to further boostcooperation between the UN and Vietnam.

Theyemphasised the importance and necessity of adopting a post-2015Development Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals in September, andreaching a new international agreement on climate change response inDecember this year.

As one of developing countriesaffected most by climate change, particularly rising sea level, Vietnamhas been active in carrying out drastic measures to cope with thephenomenon, Minh stated.

He also appreciated theUN’s assistance for Vietnam, especially through the implementation ofthe “Delivering as One” initiative and the construction of the “One UNHouse” in Vietnam.

Regarding recent developments andtensions in the East Sea, the Deputy PM asked the United Nations tocontinue keeping a close watch on the issue and urging the partiesconcerned to address disputes by peaceful means in line withinternational law.

The Secretary General expressed his concernabout the increasing tensions in the East Sea, affirming that the UN iswilling to boost the settlement of the disputes by peaceful measures.

He also expressed his hope that ASEAN and China soon conclude negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

After the meeting, both host and guest attended an inaugural ceremonyof the “One UN House” and a conference reviewing one year since Vietnamparticipated in UN peace-keeping missions.-VNA
